October 16 is SUDEP Action Day, a day where we remember loved ones lost to epilepsy and stand with bereaved families, as we raise awareness of SUDEP and other causes of epilepsy-related harm. On SUDEP Action Day, we ask West Australians to take a moment to empower themselves and the wider community, with knowledge about risk-reduction, that may help to save future lives.

More than 300 Australians die each year from epilepsy-related causes. Over half of these deaths are due to SUDEP. SUDEP stands for Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy, and it is a term used when a person living with epilepsy dies unexpectedly and the post-mortem fails to establish another cause of death.

It’s important for every household to know seizure first aid, and for people living with epilepsy, to actively work to reduce risk, by undertaking risk reduction measures, such as adhering to their medication regimen, managing seizure triggers, and getting adequate sleep.

If you happen to be in Perth on the evening of SUDEP Action Day, keep an eye out for the Perth Railway Station on Wellington street, which will shine purple to help raise awareness of epilepsy and to remember those West Australians who have been lost to epilepsy. This one singular point on the transport network, which runs right across our large state, is a symbolic gesture of unity.

In addition, St George’s Cathedral, in the heart of Perth City, will be acknowledging this poignant day, and is showing unity with Epilepsy Warriors, their loved ones and bereaved families, by making special mention of the day, and sharing awareness-raising materials at their morning services.
